Tilos is very much off the beaten track, lying roughly half way between Rhodes and Kos. Until recently there were few ferries or hydrofoils each week, but now Tilos has her own catamaran operating from mid May to September, so getting there is much easier. Except for July and August, the island is uncrowded and tranquil, appealing to genuine travellers who value the Greek way of life. At first sight, the island appears barren – arid mountains and sheer cliffs swooping down to the sea.

What you do not see at first are the wonderful fertile valleys of the interior, full of fruit trees and flowers. This is a marvellous island for walkers as some of the original mule tracks remain, and you can walk along them for miles through a wonderful landscape, alive with flowers and birds. The countryside has hardly changed for hundreds of years.

Tilos has suffered the same erosion of population which has affected most of the Dodecanese islands. Many of the local families have been forced by poverty to emigrate, so now the dwindling population stands at around 300 people, heavily outnumbered by over 3,000 wild goats which roam the hills. It is an incredibly beautiful, untamed countryside just waiting to be explored.

There are two thriving villages left on the island; Livadia, the main harbour where we have all our accommodation, and Megalo Chorio sheltering in an inland valley watched over by the ruins of one of seven Crusader castles.

There is also one completely deserted village, Micro Chorio, with only 3 little churches still with their roofs intact. Here, during the summer months, a music bar flourishes and bothers no one except the odd goat. Livadia is a little holiday village with a small harbour, which lies at the end of a very long pebbly beach.

In a very short distance from Livadi beach is situated the complex which is surrounded by verdurous gardens.
