Syros the administrative capital of the Cyclades islands dominates the centre of the island cluster. Theophile Gautier a widely esteemed French poet toured the island at the beginning of 19th century.

Of Syros he wrote:
“Syros is almost the omphalos (navel) of Greece, the capital city of elegance and nobleness. Who could ever imagine to meet this city planted on a rocky island of the Aegean Sea!”

Syros lacks the provision of the customary tourist amenities of Rhodes, Crete or Corfu. The appeal of Syros is that it is one the most Greek of the Cyclades islands. In Syros you can observe the Greeks going about their lives unconstrained and indifferent to mass tourism enterprise. Syros is the least tourist-driven Cycladic Island and here lies its charm.

On arrival in Syros you will disembark in Hermoupolis one of Greece’s key ports appropriately named after Hermes the God of commerce, your eyes will bulge as your gaze is drawn to the magnificent neo-classical mansions of ancient mariners. Here is evidence of the immense prosperity and wealth that once flowed through this land of Syros. You get a real sense of the former glory of Syros.

Hermoupolis in Syros was founded by refugees escaping from the Turkish massacre after the Greek Revolution in 1821. In this case extreme adversities lead to great creativity. Hermoupolis now hosts an annual music festival in Syros. The gala in Syros is organised by the “Cultural Centre of Hermoupolis” . It attracts international interest and world class orchestras and artists.

During the festival in Syros there are concerts, master classes, junior-classes and competitions. The Apollo Musical Theatre in Syros, also known as La Piccola Scala, modeled on the Milanese landmark, is at the epicenter of the festival.

During the 12th century Syros was colonised by the French aesthetically the indisputable French panache is still apparent on Syros. After the Greek war of independence, the Greek orthodox refugees settled themselves on the island of Syros and now there is an intriguing mix of Latin-Greek quarters. There’s an energetic vibe throughout the town. At the palm tree-lined main square of Plateia Miaouli on Syros, you can find numerous cafes, bars and ouzeries.

Transportation to Syros from the port of Piraeus is frequent and the journey short. For those planning to stay on the Syros for a few days, the school teachers may find inspiration in a small cave on Syros. This cave is where Ferekides, teacher to Pythagoras, tutored his pupil. In the Church of the Assumption on Syros an ancient masterpiece by El Greco, the renowned artist can be seen and sketches of the town by Edward Lear still hang in the tiny museum in the medieval settlement of Ano Syros.

Galissas on the west coast of Syros once an agricultural village, it is now a popular resort you will find one of the best beaches here . Or hire a bike and explore Syros any one of the small beaches or villages. If you haven’t tried authentic (Turkish delight) ask for “loukoumia”, Syros is famed for the sugar-powdered sweets.
